LCG Application Area projects

The LCG Persistency Framework consists of three software projects (POOL, COOL and CORAL) that address the data access requirements of the physics applications used by the LHC experiments. The software is developed in collaboration between the CERN IT Department and the three experiments (ATLAS, CMS and LHCb) that are using it to access their data.

POOL is a hybrid technology store for C++ objects and object collections, using a mixture of streaming and relational technologies.

COOL manages the time variation and versioning of the experiment conditions data.

CORAL is an SQL-free abstraction layer for accessing data stored using relational database technologies such as Oracle or MySQL. CORAL is used both directly by experiment-specific applications and internally by POOL and COOL.
